STRUCTURAL TRAINING PROJECT (PSF): Sustainable Soil Use and Management in Degraded agro-ecosystems (SUMO), From March 20th to March 22th.

INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH NETWORK (IRN): Identification and mitigation of soil degradation for an optimization of sustainable food production in Southeast Asia (COMPACSOL), from March 22th to March 24th.

Organized by the Institute of Ecology and Environmental Sciences of Paris (iEES Paris) and the Institute of Technology of Cambodia (ITC), workshops from the PSF SUMO and IRN COMPACSOL were held in Phnom Penh and in Kampong Chhnang province, Cambodia, from March 20th to March 24th 2023. These workshops endeavoured to strengthen teaching and research on soil, as well as to improve the existing laboratories and analytical capabilities in Southeast-Asia. These workshops brought together 28 scientists, students and development actors from Cambodia (ITC, NUBB, Agrisud, RUA and Department of Agriculture, Land Resource Management of GDA), Laos (NuoL, DALRM), Vietnam (SFRI VNU), Thailand (LDD) and France (IRD). These days were an opportunity to train scientists to the description of soil profiles in situ, to the notions of pedogenesis and evolution based on the classification of the World Reference Base (WRB, 2022), and to the study of soil porosity and its impact on water and carbon dynamics, in order to determine carbon stocks in cultivated and non-cultivated environments. Finally, these workshops were an opportunity to open discussions on the evolution of agricultural practices associated with the conservation and rehabilitation of degraded soils in the region.
